How To Rotate Tires

If you’re a driver in Los Angeles, every now and again you’ll have to rotate your tires. Rotating your tires will ensure that your tires wear down more evenly, preventing a trip to get new tires as long as possible. FIAT of Glendale is going to tell you how to rotate your tires and while you’re at it, you should check out our parts specials.

Why Rotate Your Tires?

The way you drive will wear down your tires over time. Because of the natural variations in your Pasadena drive, you won’t wear your tires down evenly across all four tires. The outside edges of your front tires will wear down when you turn while your back tires will wear down more evenly. If you leave your tires in place for a long time without rotating them, they’ll wear out quicker and you’ll be buying new tires sooner.

How Often To Rotate Your Tires

Drivetrains that are front- and rear-wheel drive need to have their tires rotated every 5,000 to 7,500 miles, while all-wheel drive vehicles should be rotated every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. You should check your owner’s manual to get the best idea of what the right tire rotation schedule is for your make and model.

Tire Position

  • FWD Tires: For FWD cars, move the front tires to the back with the same right/left position while you switch sides going from back to front. For instance, your old rear left becomes the new front right while your old front left becomes your new rear left.
  • RWD Tires: You do the reverse for RWD tires. For instance, your old front left will become your new rear right while your old rear left will become your new front left.

How To Do a Tire Rotation

If you need to rotate your tires at home, you’re going to need a car jack and a lug nut wrench. Here’s how you do it:

  1. Put the parking brake on.
  2. Loosen the lug nuts on all four wheels without removing them all the way.
  3. Lift the first wheel with a car jack and put the jack stand underneath the raised wheel.
  4. Remove each tire one at a time.
  5. Check your tire pressure while your tires are off the car, then put the tire in the correct position based on what drivetrain you have and put the lug nuts back in as tight as you can.
  6. Lower the car from the jack stands and with the lug nut wrench, tighten the lug nuts. Tighten them diagonally in a star pattern to make sure that they tighten evenly. If you don’t tighten them evenly, it might warp your brake rotor.
